Potomac Heritage Partnership and West Virginia
Potomac Heritage Partnership is working with the West Virginia Development Office and the
Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, along with other state and local partners to further
develop the West Virginia Cultural Heritage Tourism Program. With funding from The Claude
Worthington Benedum Foundation, HUD and various state programs, this partnership will launch
various initiatives in the coming months that may serve as models for similar efforts elsewhere
in the Watershed. Activities include:
Enhancement and further development of West Virginia Cultural Heritage Tourism Program;
Feasibility Study for Appalachian Forest Heritage Area, which may include a National Heritage
Area designation; Ground-breaking research on rural/heritage tourists with capacity training to
follow for small businesses and non-profits; Eleven workshops on varying subjects; and thanks to
the valued assistance of the Student Conservation Association, two interns will be hired to assist
in heritage tourism efforts.

Potomac Heritage Partnership's Rural and Agri-tourism Conference is a "big success."
Evaluations are in on our conference held last June, and we are delighted to have assisted so many communities and
leaders in their efforts to include rural/agritourism as part of their community and economic development plans.
Two-and-one half days of networking, more than twenty sessions and two terrific workshops resulted in two-thirds of
the participants noting that the conference "exceeded expectations," and one-third saying it "met expectations."
This is especially important because attendees were almost evenly divided in their knowledge of rural and agritourism,
rating themselves are beginners, intermediate and advanced in their expertise. Our thanks to our main sponsor, West Virginia
USDA-Rural Development, and the many speakers and supporters for making this such a successful joint venture.
