A flood control dam for a 5,600 acre watershed has created a 250-acre lake in this wooded park, which has great bass fishing. St. Mary's River State Park is one of the newer parks of the state. Situated at the northern end of the St. Mary's River watershed, the park shows a wide range of habitats, from wooded acres and fields to swamps and small streams.

From as far back as 3000 B.C. evidence exists that Indians lived in the Southern Maryland area. Several different tribes occupied the area at different times, some of which include the Piscataway-Conoy, algonquins, and the Susquehannocks. Many of the names they used for their villages and rivers are still used today.

Approximately 1,700 acres of the park are open to small game and deer hunting. Small game species found at St. Mary's River State Park include squirrels, rabbits, doves and quail. White-tailed deer are also plentiful and may be hunted with bow and arrow, muzzleloader or shotgun. Turkey hunting is permitted only during the spring gobbler season. A nearly 250 acre freshwater lake provides fishing for bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, pickerel and catfish.

A nine-mile trail circles the 250-acre lake. The park features a boat launch, fishing, flat water canoeing, hiking horseback and mountain biking trails, hunting, picnicking.

Funding for Maryland's state parks and conservation areas is provided through the Department of Natural Resources, Program Open Space. Established in 1969, Program Open Space symbolizes Maryland's long term commitment to conserving natural resources while providing exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities.
